Caffeine Gum for Night Shift
By Blake Settle, founder of REV Gum.
Night shift is the hardest case for caffeine. You need it to work at 3 a.m., and you need to be able to sleep at 9 a.m. Most advice ignores the second half. This guide covers how to dose caffeine gum across a shift, when to stop, and what else protects your sleep. We make caffeine gum, so read with that in mind.
Why gum fits a night shift
Fast onset. Caffeine from gum is absorbed through the mouth and felt in roughly 5 to 10 minutes. Coffee or a pill takes 30 to 45 minutes. When the 3 a.m. slump hits on a hospital floor or a picking line, 10 minutes is more useful than 45.
Small, repeatable doses. REV Energy Performance is 60 mg per piece; REV Energy Extra Strength is 100 mg. You can take one piece when you need it instead of front-loading a large coffee at the start of the shift and running out by the middle.
Nothing to carry, spill, or reheat. A pack fits in scrubs, a vest pocket, or an apron. There is no cup to leave at a nurses' station or a cold half-coffee to throw out.
No sugar. REV has no sugar or corn syrup, which matters when your other options at 2 a.m. are vending-machine energy drinks.
Dosing across a shift
The goal is a moderate, steady level early and middle, tapering to nothing before the end. A pattern that works for a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift, with a bedtime around 9 a.m.:
| Time | Dose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Start of shift (7–8 p.m.) | 1 piece (60 or 100 mg) | Sets a baseline |
| Mid-shift slump (2–3 a.m.) | 1 piece (60 mg) | The hardest hour for most people. This is the last dose. |
| After 3 a.m. | None | Bedtime minus 6 hours |
That is 120 to 160 mg for the shift, well under the FDA's general guidance of 400 mg per day for healthy adults. Adjust to your own bedtime: take the time you plan to sleep, subtract 6 hours, and stop caffeine there.
Chew each piece for at least 5 minutes. If you feel jittery, skip the next dose. Caffeine on an empty stomach at 3 a.m. hits harder than it does at 3 p.m.
The 6-hour rule and why it matters more for you
Drake and colleagues (Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, 2013) found that caffeine taken 6 hours before bed still cut total sleep measurably, even when people did not notice. For day workers, this is an inconvenience. For night-shift workers, daytime sleep is already shorter and lighter because of light, noise, and your body clock, so losing more to caffeine compounds a real deficit.
That is why the last dose in the table above is mid-shift, not at 6 a.m. for the drive home. If the drive home is the problem, see caffeine gum for driving; a short nap before leaving is often the better tool.
Sleep hygiene for night workers
Caffeine is one lever. These are the others, and they matter more:
- Dark bedroom. Blackout curtains or a sleep mask. Daylight is the strongest signal telling your body to stay awake.
- Sunglasses on the way home. Reduces the morning light exposure that resets your clock.
- Same sleep window on days off as much as you can manage. Flipping fully back to a day schedule on your two days off is the hardest thing on your body.
- Phone on do-not-disturb. Deliveries, family, and daytime calls fragment sleep.
- Cool room, white noise. The usual advice, more important when the neighborhood is awake.
- Eat your main meal before the shift, not at 4 a.m.
Who this is for
We hear from nurses and techs, warehouse and fulfillment staff, hotel and bar staff, security, and plant operators. The pattern is the same: a hard stretch in the small hours, and a sleep window that starts when everyone else's day does. Gum is not a fix for shift work. It is a way to get caffeine in small, fast, sugar-free doses when you have decided you need it.

FAQ
How should I take caffeine gum during a night shift?
One piece at the start of the shift, one at the mid-shift slump (around 2–3 a.m. for a 7-to-7 shift), and nothing in the 6 hours before you plan to sleep. Chew each piece for at least 5 minutes.
When should I stop caffeine before sleeping after a night shift?
At least 6 hours before bedtime. Caffeine at that point still reduces sleep (Drake et al., J Clin Sleep Med 2013). If you sleep at 9 a.m., stop by 3 a.m.
Is caffeine gum better than coffee for night shift?
It works in 5 to 10 minutes instead of 30 to 45, comes in fixed 60 or 100 mg doses, has no sugar, and fits in a pocket. Coffee is fine too if you count the dose and stop early enough.
How much caffeine is safe on a night shift?
The FDA's general guidance for healthy adults is up to 400 mg a day from all sources. The dosing pattern above uses 120 to 160 mg.
Can caffeine gum help me stay awake on the drive home?
It can, but it will also cut into your daytime sleep. A short nap before driving is often a better option. If you use gum, use one 60 mg piece.
