Caffeine Gum, Explained
By Blake Settle, founder of REV Gum.
We make caffeine gum, so read this knowing where we stand. We have tried to keep it factual, cite studies where we make a claim, and state competitor facts neutrally. If you just want the short version: caffeine gum is caffeine delivered through the lining of your mouth, it works faster than a drink or a pill, and the dose is fixed per piece so you always know what you took.
What caffeine gum is
Caffeine gum is chewing gum with a measured amount of caffeine in each piece. You chew it like ordinary gum. The caffeine is released as you chew and is absorbed mostly through the mucous membranes of the mouth (buccal absorption), with the rest swallowed and absorbed through the gut like any other caffeine.
The category has been around for decades. A caffeinated gum called "Stay Alert" has been included in US military rations, which is where a lot of the early research on caffeine gum came from. Consumer brands, including REV, came later.
REV Gum was founded in Austin, Texas in 2018. Our two energy products are REV Energy Performance (60 mg caffeine per piece) and REV Energy Extra Strength (100 mg per piece), both in Spearmint and Polar Mint. They contain caffeine and nothing else that is meant to be "active": no L-theanine, no B-vitamins, no taurine. No sugar, no corn syrup, gluten-free.
How caffeine gum works
When you drink coffee or swallow a pill, the caffeine has to travel to your stomach and small intestine before it enters the bloodstream. That usually takes 30 to 45 minutes before you notice it.
With gum, chewing releases caffeine into your saliva, and a large share of it crosses directly into the blood vessels under your tongue and in your cheeks. In a pharmacokinetic study, Kamimori and colleagues (International Journal of Pharmaceutics, 2002) compared caffeine gum to caffeine capsules and found the gum was absorbed significantly faster. In practice, most people feel gum in roughly 5 to 10 minutes.
Two things follow from this:
- Chew for at least 5 minutes. The caffeine comes out while you chew. If you spit it out after 30 seconds, you have thrown most of it away.
- You can time it precisely. Because the onset is fast, you can chew right before the thing you need it for instead of guessing 40 minutes ahead.
The caffeine itself is the same molecule as in coffee. Gum does not make caffeine stronger or longer-lasting. It changes the delivery, not the drug.
How much caffeine is in caffeine gum, by brand
Doses vary a lot by brand, which is why you should read the label rather than assume.
| Product | Caffeine per piece | Other active ingredients |
|---|---|---|
| REV Energy Performance | 60 mg | None |
| REV Energy Extra Strength | 100 mg | None |
| Neuro Gum (standard) | 40 mg | 60 mg L-theanine, vitamins B6 and B12 |
| Neuro Gum Extra Strength | 100 mg | see label |
| Category range | roughly 40–160 mg | varies |
For reference, the FDA states that 400 mg of caffeine per day is an amount generally not associated with negative effects for healthy adults. Gum does not vary: a 100 mg piece is 100 mg every time.
How to use caffeine gum
- Start with one piece. If you are new to caffeine gum, start with 60 mg (one REV Performance) and see how you respond before moving to 100 mg.
- Chew for at least 5 minutes. Longer is fine. Most of the caffeine is released in the first several minutes of chewing.
- Wait before taking a second piece. Because onset is fast, you will know within 10 to 15 minutes whether you need more.
- Count everything. Coffee, tea, soda, energy drinks, pre-workout, and gum all add up toward the same daily total.
- Stop at least 6 hours before bed. Caffeine taken 6 hours before bedtime still measurably disrupts sleep (Drake et al., Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, 2013).
Who uses caffeine gum
The people who buy REV tend to fall into a few groups, and we have written a guide for each:
- Runners and endurance athletes who want caffeine without the stomach load of a gel or a drink.
- Drivers, including truckers and shift commuters, who need something faster than a gas-station coffee.
- Military, law enforcement, and first responders, where caffeine gum has the longest track record.
- Students and knowledge workers who want a controlled dose for focus.
- Night-shift workers in healthcare, warehouses, and hospitality.
- People avoiding sugar, including diabetics and people eating keto.
Caffeine gum vs coffee vs energy drinks vs pills
| Caffeine gum | Coffee | Energy drinks | Caffeine pills | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Onset | ~5–10 min | ~30–45 min | ~30–45 min | ~30–45 min |
| Dose control | Fixed per piece (REV: 60 or 100 mg) | Varies by cup, bean, brew | Fixed per can, but usually one large dose | Fixed per pill, usually 100–200 mg |
| Sugar | REV: none | None unless added | Often high; sugar-free versions exist | None |
| Portability | Pocket; no liquid, no refrigeration | Needs a cup and hot water | Can; bulky, warm after opening | |
| Cost per 100 mg caffeine | REV Extra Strength: $0.53. REV Performance: $0.83. Neuro Gum: $1.16 | Varies widely | Varies widely | Varies widely |
| Can you stop mid-dose? | Yes, spit it out | Only by not finishing the cup | Only by not finishing the can | No |
REV cost figures are computed from list price: $38.00 for 72 pieces at 100 mg, and $35.98 for 72 pieces at 60 mg. Neuro Gum's figure is based on its listed price ($24.99 for 54 pieces at 40 mg, Sept 2026). We have not filled in coffee, energy drink, or pill prices because they vary too much to state one honest number.

Is caffeine gum safe?
Caffeine gum is as safe as the caffeine in it. The same rules apply as for any caffeine source:
- Not for children.
- Pregnant or breastfeeding: limit caffeine and talk to your doctor before using any caffeine product.
- Stay under 400 mg per day from all sources combined unless your doctor has told you something different. That is four REV Extra Strength pieces or six to seven REV Performance pieces, with nothing else.
- Avoid within about 6 hours of bedtime.
- If you feel jittery, anxious, or your heart is racing, stop. Because gum works quickly, you also find out quickly if you have had enough.
- Medical conditions and medications: if you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, anxiety disorder, or take medication that interacts with caffeine, ask your doctor first.
REV is sugar-free and contains no corn syrup. Our founder is a type-1 diabetic and started the company partly because he wanted caffeine without sugar. That is not a medical claim; if you have diabetes or any other condition, check with your doctor.
What the research says
The studies below are peer-reviewed. We keep a running list on our studies blog and summarize the mechanism on our science page.
- Absorption: Kamimori et al., International Journal of Pharmaceutics, 2002. Caffeine from gum was absorbed faster than from capsules.
- Running: Whalley, Dearing & Paton, International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance, 2020. Caffeine gum improved 5-km running performance.
- Sprinting: Paton et al., Journal of Sports Sciences, 2010. Caffeinated gum reduced fatigue in trained sprinters.
- Tactical performance: Shiu et al., European Journal of Applied Physiology, 2026. In 16 special-forces soldiers, 3 mg/kg of caffeine from gum improved grip strength (+4.4 kg), vertical jump, reaction time, shooting accuracy, and close-quarters-battle time.
- Driving: Reyner & Horne, Psychophysiology, 2000. 200 mg of caffeine reduced sleepiness and driving incidents in a simulator during early-morning driving.
None of these studies were funded by REV.
FAQ
How long does caffeine gum take to work?
Most people feel it in roughly 5 to 10 minutes, because caffeine is absorbed through the lining of the mouth while you chew. Coffee and pills typically take 30 to 45 minutes.
How much caffeine is in a piece of caffeine gum?
It depends on the brand. REV Energy Performance has 60 mg per piece and REV Energy Extra Strength has 100 mg. Neuro Gum's standard product has 40 mg. Across the category, doses run from roughly 40 to 160 mg per piece.
How long should I chew caffeine gum?
At least 5 minutes. The caffeine is released while you chew, so spitting it out early wastes most of the dose.
Is caffeine gum better than coffee?
It is faster and the dose is fixed, and it is easier to carry. Coffee is a drink many people enjoy for its own sake. Neither is "better"; they are different delivery methods for the same caffeine.
Is caffeine gum safe?
For healthy adults, yes, within the FDA's general guidance of up to 400 mg of caffeine per day from all sources. It is not for children. If you are pregnant, have a heart condition, or take medications, ask your doctor first. Stop if you feel jittery.
Does caffeine gum have sugar?
REV does not. It is sugar-free, has no corn syrup, and is gluten-free. Check the label on other brands.
